Depends how rich you are I guess.

My experience is if you have to make the occasional short local call while roaming overseas, say to book a hotel, it won't break the bank. Texting is affordable too. Anything else will bite especially if you call Australia while you are roaming.

You do if your sim is from another country. I'd recommend you get yourself a Vodafone sim once you land and enable roaming on it. BTW, vodafone UK has some cheap rates (5p/min) calling from UK to other countries.
